This highlights why it is such a great thing the iPad is “unlocked” carrier wise. Sooner or later t-mobile will have a dataplan available via mini-sim cards, and I can slap one in this baby and switch to them. Rest assured I plan to, even if the deal is the exact same, just to prove a point to AT&T. Someone at work has brought up a very good point just now. I almost switched to AT&T just to get an iPhone, but repeated poor service by people I knew who had them thankfully swayed me away from AT&T. Hope it works out for you somehow. I have been a Mac/Apple fan forever (srsly- 1984) but this AT&T connection is putting them in a bad light - especially if Apple has deceived customers on behalf of AT&T. Maybe the contract is effective the day you agreed to it and the ship date is coincidental? Could hope... Call Cupertino. Tell them you feel lied to by an old friend.
